Today, many professionals use social media as their main form of marketing. The benefits of doing so are clear: you can create a brand for yourself, attract more clients, and get your content out there.

There are nearly endless examples of professionals doing it. Everyone--from politicians to fast-food restaurants--seem to have an active social media presence. And it is probably a winning strategy to stay relevant in the modern business world.

But, for those of us concerned about the "downsides" of social media (e.g. the spread of misinformation, the promotion of extremism, etc.), how can we responsibly market ourselves and our ideas on social media? How can we attract an audience without engaging in mean-spirited debate or sensationalism?

In my future posts, I will be touching on issues that are more political in nature. So, to avoid the "downsides" of social media, I will be sure to provide links to reliable sources at the end of each post and direct my readers to look at them for themselves. I don't want anyone to form strong opinions just based on my posts. I don't think I'm qualified to be a "thought leader" on any important issues, and I think too many people try to be one as it is. The goal of my posts is to share my ideas and start conversations with those who agree--and disagree--with me.

I urge you to do the same--or to find a similar approach that works for you--when marketing yourself and your ideas on social media.

But, as always, don't just take my word for it! Check out my references below:
