Legal Tech Series: Should small firms purchase document management systems?

Jesse Wood, CEO of eFileCabinet, said, "A document management system is a great way for businesses to become more efficient in their respective industries, regardless of the size of the company or how many clients it has." Was he correct? Are document management systems worth buying for small firms?


While I think he is right that such systems offer some benefit to small firms, the better question is whether that benefit is worth the cost. To that question, I would answer no.


Document management systems have a lesser benefit to small firms for one simple reason: small firms use less documents and, thus, have less need for a comprehensive system of tracking them.


Moreover, small firms have other options for electronic storage; they can simply use their practice software (e.g. Clio, FirmCentral, etc.). Legal softwares almost always allow for the uploading and storage of documents to a cloud.


While you may need to expend some extra time and energy into keeping the documents in order, using your practice software will save you the extra unnecessary expense of purchasing a separate document management system.
