How long do you need to look at a website before you know whether it is worth visiting? A minute? Less than that?
These implicit, first-impression decisions are sometimes made based solely on the website's design.
While I am no graphic designer--and I won't pretend to be--I want to share some general advice I have found useful for legal website's design.
1. Clarity
You want to create a visually logical format. This means, among other things, you want clear headings and smooth transitions from one section to the next. The goal is for the user to immediately find what they are looking for after a quick glance at the homepage.
2. Simplicity
You want the general design to be consistent and repetitive. Don't worry about being too boring (yet). As a legal website, users will care more about finding the information they need than being entertained by your design.
3. Contrast
You need to have some variation in colors, text size, and other contrasting visuals (e.g. pictures mixed with text). It is possible for your website to be too boring. For example, if you just post one large block of text, no one would want to read your website.
But don't just take my word for it! Check out my references below:
